The project will include the following components;

The engineering designs, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning of the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and its associated infrastructure at various sites of Eskom Distribution (Dx) grids  including the Eskom Sere Wind Farm (Western Cape) and Melkhout (Eastern Cape) sites. This project will be implemented in phases.

The BESS is aimed at addressing voltage, frequency, capacity energy and other constraints on the Dx networks, notably related to the integration of intermittent energy source into these networks. Each solution is deemed to be unique in relation to the constraint identified at each Dx site. The methodology for network load profile analysis was used to evaluate the suitability of the BESS solution for each Dx network.

Deliverables from the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) Contractor(s) will include but not limited to the items below:

·           Concept design;

·           Detail Design of the system integrated to the substation;

·           Supply of required equipment;

·           Construction

·           Installation of the system;

·           Commissioning;

·           Operating and Maintenance documentation;

·           Training and skills transfer to Eskom teams.

The EPC contractor(s) shall be required to provide a proposal for the operation and maintenance of the plant during the warranty period. Eskom will reserve the right to accept the associated services. The maintenance service shall include the preventative, corrective and predictive maintenance.
